‘SAM.’ is an architectural and design studio based in Mumbai.

It is driven by a visionary mission. The goal is to pave the way towards a post-Anthropocentric future through the use of metabolic design strategies. At the core of ‘SAM.’ lies a strong commitment to challenging traditional design paradigms. The studio moves beyond the anthropocentric perspectives that have long influenced architectural discourse. By adopting metabolic design principles, the studio aims to create spaces and structures. These designs seamlessly integrate with their surrounding ecosystems. They also respond to these ecosystems. n pursuit of this ambitious vision, ‘SAM.’ embraces a multidisciplinary

approach, drawing upon insights rom architecture, biology, ecology, and technology. This interdisciplinary blend not only fosters innovation. It also nurtures a holistic understanding of the intricate relationships between built environments and the natural world. With Mumbai as its vibrant backdrop, ‘SAM.’ envisions a future where architecture acts as a catalyst for ecological regeneration and symbiotic coexistence. Through thoughtful design interventions, the studio maintains a steadfast commitment to sustainability. They aspire to shape environments that not only serve human needs but also harmonize with the broader web of life.

Aditya Mandlik is a prominent young architect based in Mumbai. He is recognized for his innovative approach that seamlessly blends architecture, arts, and urbanism. Studio Aditya Mandlik’s Factory 5.0 was featured in The Sunday Guardian Live as the only Indian architecture project showcased at Dutch Design Week 2025 — Europe’s largest design festival. 🇳🇱✨

As the pavilion invited questions like “Are worms the architects of the future?” it challenged traditional design by placing biological processes and non-human intelligence at the heart of architectural making.

Factory 5.0 marks a milestone for Indian design on the global stage, engaging international audiences in conversations about ecological collaboration, post-anthropocentric thinking, and the future of design amid climate and technological urgency.

Featured on Archello, #Factory 5.0 by Studio Aditya Mandlik reimagines architecture as a living, metabolic system. Rather than fixed form, the pavilion evolves over time through biological collaboration—where worms actively decompose Styrofoam, mediating light, shadow, and space. By embracing impermanence, disassembly, and ecological dialogue, the project proposes a future where design works with natural intelligence and regenerative cycles. a grand project presented at @dutchdesignweek 2025 in collaboration with @dutchdesignfoundation and @bureaubinnenstadeindhoven
In conversation with designboom, Aditya Mandlik re In conversation with designboom, Aditya Mandlik reflects on Factory 5.0 as an evolving design method—one that works with biological systems rather than over them.

The project explores architecture through collaboration with non-human intelligence. By working with worms to decompose styrofoam, Factory 5.0 questions authorship, permanence, and inherited ideas of control within architectural production.

Rather than treating waste as an end condition, the work approaches decomposition as a form of making—where time, decay, and biological agency actively shape spatial outcomes. The pavilion is conceived as an open system, designed to change, disassemble, and leave behind traces rather than fixed objects.

At its core, Factory 5.0 asks:
How might architecture operate in a more-than-human world?
And what does design look like when nature is a collaborator, not a resource?

Grateful to @designboom for the conversation and platform.

FACTORY 5.0 is a living architectural experiment – FACTORY 5.0 is a living architectural experiment - a pavilion that works with nature to break down what industry has built.
10,000 mealworms digest polystyrene foam panels, radically rethinking architecture as temporary, living, and regenerative. (SAM) challenges how we build and what we leave behind - raising questions about the future of construction, circularity, and the role of design in ecological restoration.
Built from 546 digitally fabricated
components and 210 Styrofoam plates, it embraces non-human entities as co-creators of change. As the pavilion is consumed, its form and texture evolve - leaving behind “memory objects,” traces of transformation, and symbols of a post-carbon future.

Designing small spaces is all about big ideas. In Designing small spaces is all about big ideas.
In this “half-room” from Project 1203, a clean-lined bed, integrated storage, and a compact work desk create a multifunctional retreat that still feels open and airy. Natural light filters through sheer blinds, softening the space while keeping it bright.

A study, a bedroom, a pause in the day—this room adapts with ease, proving that thoughtful design makes every square foot count.

This space from #Project1203 was designed to be calm yet personal—framed by full-height curtains and opening into a private balcony garden that brings the outdoors in.

The material palette remains grounded in warmth: soft upholstery, natural wood, and woven flooring create a tactile base, while clean cabinetry and curated art lend structure and clarity.

It’s a bedroom built for rest, reflection, and the quiet rhythm of everyday living.

Clarity in form. Stillness in finish. This Salt & Clarity in form. Stillness in finish.

This Salt & Pepper bathroom from #Project1203 is sculpted in one continuous surface—where basin, counter, and niche merge into a single, matte monolith. The soft speckled tone catches light gently, shifting from muted to luminous with the time of day.

Fixtures are minimal and embedded, mirrors float, and lighting is restrained—letting the space breathe, not boast.

A quiet corner of the home, designed for pause, rhythm, and everyday clarity.

In #Project1203, we kept the palette soft and neutral—letting textures, natural light, and personal objects bring quiet character to the space. Sculptural seating anchors the room without crowding it, while built-in shelves display a mix of ceramics and memories collected over time.

This kitchen in #Project1203 is designed to perform quietly—through balance, detail, and flow. A dual-toned palette of matte grey and soft white keeps the space visually calm, while brass and copper touches nod gently to memory and tradition.

Every element is intentional: the handle-less cabinetry, the black granite counter, the open niches that hold stories as much as they do objects.

It’s a space that supports daily life—quietly, beautifully, and without compromise.

Where texture speaks and silence holds shape. Thi Where texture speaks and silence holds shape.

This bathroom from #Project1203 is a study in tonal restraint and tactile intelligence. Clad entirely in small-format grey tiles, the space shifts in texture where it matters—coarser at points of touch, smoother where water flows—turning everyday routines into quiet, grounding rituals.

A sculpted basin, soft integrated lighting, and a calming grid bring rhythm and clarity to a compact footprint.

Design is in the details—and in how they feel.
